Drainage systems in houses have not changed much in design over the last century. Air is required to assist drainage, so vents must exist within the system. In order to prevent sewer gases from entering the home, p-traps are installed at each fixture. These traps contain water, and form an air seal against odors. These characteristics have been in place for decades. The materials used to construct the drainage system, however, have changed drastically. There is good reason for this.
Early interior drainage systems were composed mostly of a combination of cast iron, lead, and copper. After many years, this setup was found to clog very easily due to the nature of the materials. Cast iron has rough interior walls, and lead isn’t much better. Food, waste, and lint from your washing machine all wreak havoc on older lines, causing frequent clogs. Rotting food also has corrosive properties, and will speed up rust formation inside the drains. This combination leads to deteriorating drains, rust holes, and constant leaks.
